Individual therapy

Individual psychotherapy is a process of self-discovery and growth. It can help increase self-awareness, understanding, self-confidence, solve problems, improve relationships, and make good decisions for emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual well-being. Individual therapy is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained mental health therapist to achieve their individual goals in a safe, caring, and confidential environment.

Traditionally, individual therapy has involved a series of regular one-on-one sessions with a highly educated, well trained human therapist. The number of sessions can vary from a single session through to 40 or 50 sessions over a 2 year period, depending on the nature of the issues someone is struggling with. For instance, symptoms and issues that are mild and/or have only recently started, effective psychological treatment typically includes 1 -2 assessment sessions followed by 6 - 10 therapy sessions. For longer-term, chronic or persistent mental health issues and related difficulties, effective treatment may involve 20 - 40 sessions over a 2 year period.

To help people achieve their goals and maintain the change they want in their lives, active treatment typically involves a series of weekly sessions until symptoms start to abate and meaningful change starts occurring outside of sessions. The frequency of sessions then titrates to fortnightly and then to monthly maintenance sessions, to help ensure progress is sustained and to catch any hiccups early. Once a person’s therapy goals have been achieved, a 3-month booster session is often scheduled before concluding treatment to check-in, celebrate the progress and successes, and develop a relapse prevention plan.

Types of Psychological Therapies Available

Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a goal-directed, evidence-based approach that emphasizes building solutions rather than focusing on problems. This therapeutic method is particularly effective for individuals looking to make positive changes in a relatively short period. SFT works by identifying a client’s strengths and resources, helping them envision a clear picture of their desired future, and developing practical steps to achieve their goals.

Research shows that SFT can be highly effective in treating a variety of issues, including stress, anxiety, and relationship problems. By fostering a sense of hope and empowerment, clients can quickly gain confidence in their ability to make meaningful changes in their lives.

At Emslie Psychology, our experienced therapists utilize Solution-Focused Therapy to help clients overcome challenges and achieve their personal goals efficiently and effectively. For more information or to schedule a consultation, please contact us.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized and effective form of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. By addressing these patterns, CBT helps individuals manage and overcome various mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders. Through structured sessions, clients learn to challenge distorted thinking, develop healthier behaviors, and build coping strategies for long-term well-being.

CBT is backed by extensive research and is known for its practical, problem-solving approach, making it suitable for both short-term and long-term treatment. It empowers clients to take an active role in their recovery, providing them with tools to handle life's challenges more effectively.

At Emslie Psychology, our skilled therapists use CBT to help clients achieve lasting positive changes in their lives. To learn more about how CBT can benefit you, please contact us or schedule a consultation.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an empirically supported approach that helps individuals embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. ACT combines mindfulness skills with the practice of self-acceptance. By focusing on what truly matters in life, ACT guides individuals to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life despite the presence of distressing emotions or thoughts.

ACT is effective for a wide range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. It teaches clients to defuse from negative thoughts, accept their emotional experiences, and commit to actions that align with their values. Research has shown that ACT can lead to improved psychological flexibility, which is the ability to stay present and engaged in life even when experiencing difficult emotions.

At Emslie Psychology, our skilled therapists use ACT to help clients achieve greater emotional well-being and life satisfaction. To learn more about how ACT can benefit you, please contact us or schedule a consultation.

Schema therapy

Schema Therapy is an integrative therapeutic approach designed to help individuals understand and change deeply ingrained patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that can lead to emotional distress and help drive mental health and relationship issues. Combining elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), attachment theory, and emotion-focused therapies, Schema Therapy targets these patterns with a variety of experiential exercises in session. These exercises sometimes feel a little odd to start with but, if you give them a go, you’ll be surprised how insightful, deep and powerful they can be.

Schema Therapy is particularly effective for treating chronic psychological issues such as personality disorders, recurrent and persistent depression, anxiety and burnout, and unhelpful relationship patterns. It helps clients identify and challenge these maladaptive life patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and build more fulfilling relationships.

At Emslie Psychology, our experienced therapists utilize Schema Therapy to support clients in achieving profound and lasting change. To find out more about how Schema Therapy can benefit you, please contact us or schedule a consultation.

EMDR therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment for trauma. EMDR therapy helps individuals process and integrate distressing memories through guided eye movements and other bilateral stimulation techniques. This approach allows the brain to reframe and heal from past experiences, reducing the emotional impact of traumatic memories and alleviating symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression and other difficulties.

EMDR is especially beneficial for those who have experienced significant trauma, such as abuse, accidents, or loss. Research has shown that EMDR can lead to rapid and long-lasting relief, often achieving results more quickly than traditional talk therapies. By targeting the root causes of trauma, EMDR promotes profound emotional healing and fosters resilience.

At Emslie Psychology, our trained EMDR therapists provide compassionate and personalized care, guiding you through each step of the healing process. To learn more about how EMDR can help you recover from trauma, please contact us or schedule a consultation.

Imagery Rescripting

Imagery Rescripting (IR) is a powerful and innovative therapeutic technique designed to help individuals heal from complex trauma. This approach involves guided imagery exercises that enable clients to revisit and transform distressing memories into more positive and empowering experiences. By altering the emotional content of traumatic memories, IR helps reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression, fostering a sense of control and well-being.

IR is particularly effective for those who have experienced prolonged or repeated trauma, such as childhood abuse or chronic interpersonal violence. It not only addresses the cognitive aspects of trauma but also deeply engages with emotional and sensory experiences, making it a comprehensive treatment method. Research has shown that IR can lead to significant improvements in emotional regulation, self-esteem, and overall mental health.

At Emslie Psychology, our experienced clinicians utilize IR as part of a tailored treatment plan, providing compassionate and evidence-based care to support your journey towards recovery and resilience.
